 [The Uvula From Betelgeuse-4] Nicky and The Brain: Nick Tosches's take on Arnold Rothstein.: This is more than my disagreeing with with his opinion of a book: Tosches's dismissal of The Big Bankroll (filmed in 1961 as King of the Roaring 20's -- The Story of Arnold Rothstein [U.K. title: The Big Bankroll], with future star of The Fugitive TV series David Janssen playing Rothstein) is highly misleading in light of the fact that he sternly attempts to lay to rest the persistent rumor (apparently given a literary imprimatur by The Great Gatsby; but see below) that Rothstein fixed the 1919 World Series between the Chicago White Sox (dubbed "the Black Sox" in the wake of the scandal) and the Cincinnati Reds. Some of the Chicago players were fed up enough with the depressed wages paid by team owner Charles Comiskey ("the Old Roman") -- who was the most miserly baseball team owner of the day -- to enlist some professional gamblers to pay them to throw the Series in order to fatten their wallets. Urban legend had it that Arnold Rothstein was the man who funded this scheme, or at least gave his blessing, but Rothstein cleared himself of all suspicion at the grand jury hearings into the matter.

Assistant GM Josh Byrnes, Director of Player Development Ben Cherington, Director of Minor League Administration Raquel Ferreria, Assistant GM Jed Hoyer, Director of Baseball Operations Peter Woodfork, Advance Scouting Director Galen Carr, and Coordinator of Major League Administration Brian O'Halloran. As the Globe reports, they are very exceptional (and young) people working for Theo.
