It’s been quiet around here, sorry about that :)

[Archived in Entry]

http://phaedo.cx [Switch-Case /] I’ve been working on a lot of projects in my spare time, HTmini, a new PHP/mySQL project for Cincinnati Advance, not nearly as much Independent Eye...

Some slightly related:

The Uvula From Betelgeuse-4http://www.livejournal.com/users/uvula_fr_b4 [The Uvula From Betelgeuse-4] Nicky and The Brain: Nick Tosches's take on Arnold Rothstein.: This is more than my disagreeing with with his opinion of a book: Tosches's dismissal of The Big Bankroll (filmed in 1961 as King of the Roaring 20's -- The Story of Arnold Rothstein [U.K. title: The Big Bankroll], with future star of The Fugitive TV series David Janssen playing Rothstein) is highly misleading in light of the fact that he sternly attempts to lay to rest the persistent rumor (apparently given a literary imprimatur by The Great Gatsby; but see below) that Rothstein fixed the 1919 World Series between the Chicago White Sox (dubbed "the Black Sox" in the wake of the scandal) and the Cincinnati Reds. Some of the Chicago players were fed up enough with the depressed wages paid by team owner Charles Comiskey ("the Old Roman") -- who was the most miserly baseball team owner of the day -- to enlist some professional gamblers to pay them to throw the Series in order to fatten their wallets. Urban legend had it that Arnold Rothstein was the man who funded this scheme, or at least gave his blessing, but Rothstein cleared himself of all suspicion at the grand jury hearings into the matter.

[Jokes By Jim] Greetings, oh faithful readers...McDonald's is 50 years old, which means they have now survived longer than most of their: by those Queer Eye guys. Clinton says he keeps score by results, and that he's kept score for nearly 30... access to tests in advance are campus athletes. West Virginia has passed a law making English... anything anymore? Cincinnati's Wily Mo Pena hit a 498 foot homer Sunday. That will result in a pee

[SPORTS AND BREMERTONIANS] KRASCH: I noticed it and thought of somewhat of a public service announcement. It goes something like this: if you're going to pound the crap out of a rock with a rockhammer, wear eye protection and have people back away a few feet. I think I saw someone get a sliver of rock into their arm, or somewhere it definitely shouldn't have been. There was a place in Oregon near the Newbery Volcanic Monument that had obsidian just everywhere, but if you're hammering that stuff with reckless abandon, well, don't come to me when you need a bandage.

[Irish Aires News] 03/12/05 - Brits Resist Public Finucane Inquiry: in Reception - Cincinnati, Ohio 07:15 PM Friends of Sinn Féin Community Event - Union Hall, Local 392 Plumbers Cincinnati, Ohio Monday, March 14 07:45AM Council on Foreign Relations Breakfast - New... from Irish-Americans. He said his trip would start Saturday in Cincinnati. It also includes

[Goat Riders of the Apocalypse] Theo Epstein is the best- Evan Brunell, Part I: He hired not only Bill James and Bill Lajoie (the former a statistical guru and the latter a 70-year old former GM who relies on scouting, not statistics - the man who was the GM of the 1984 World Champion Detroit Tigers) but he surrounded himself with extremely capable lieutenants. Assistant GM Josh Byrnes, Director of Player Development Ben Cherington, Director of Minor League Administration Raquel Ferreria, Assistant GM Jed Hoyer, Director of Baseball Operations Peter Woodfork, Advance Scouting Director Galen Carr, and Coordinator of Major League Administration Brian O'Halloran. As the Globe reports, they are very exceptional (and young) people working for Theo. At least one (Josh Byrnes) and more than likely some more in the above list, will become General Managers eventually.
