[Daves Chalkboard] AnandTech: Dell 2005fpw vs. Apple Cinema Display 20-inch - Engadget - www.engadget.com / By now its no secret that Dells 2005fpw and Apples...
Some slightly related from Technorati and Google.
[HD For Indies] Mike's first side by side testing of Dell 2405 vs Apple 23" Cinema Display: The Dell as one DVI-D input, one VGA input, one component video input (auto-senses HD or SD input), on composite input, one S-video input, one composite input, 2 USB 2.0 ports, and a full range of digital still camera memory card/stick inputs that work sans drivers. Oh, and the Dell can be had for under $1000 if you work it right.
[BostonGeek] Dell 2005FPW 20.1-inch Widescreen LCD: I won’t link to the myriad forum discussions dealing with large widescreens and this phenomenon, but basically it’s when looking at the screen, you notice light bands along the corners, top, or bottom. It’s basically you seeing the LCD’s backlight shining through, and it’s usually only visible when looking at a black screen. Only some units display the problem, and it seems to be a production issue, not a technical one.
[Hand Coding » Refenestration Daily.] Dell UltraSharp 2005FPW 20.1" LCD For About $400: As I can see it, it basically works out like this. LCDs are thinner, have no refresh-rate flicker and a crisp image; but, they’re also more expensive and their color rendition may be inconsistent. CRTs, on the other hand, are relatively inexpensive, have good color rendition and they can easily display varying resolutions; however, they’re energy inefficient and it’s apparently barely impossible to get perfect screen geometry.
[Paul's Down-Home Page] Dell 2005FPW: I'm in love: A couple of weeks ago, AnandTech held a shootout comparing the Dell 2005FPW and the Apple 20" Cinema Display. The reviewer found that the two were largely identical, which isn't surprising since they use the same LCD panel. I don't have a Cinema (and never will, as long as it costs $790+), but I got a 2005FPW this week for about $400, and it rocks. 1680 x 1050 is nice enough, but the display is clear, crisp, sharp, and much brighter than my Samsung 170MP (which in turn was brighter than the old KDS monitor that I bought at Sams' Club back in 2000).
[Graffiti's Blog] Rip-off!: I know all that marketing hot-air that a company needs to "up-sell" its brand before the product/s (I'm a marketer too) but damn .if companies are essentially using the same innards on their stuff but hawking them at totally opposite price-point ends, makes you wonder if they are taking consumers for fools.
[soeren says] One more for the night: , are Apples Cinema Display and DELLs UltraSharp 2005FPW. If you know me at all, it should be clear that Im slightly biased towards Apple, and slightly biased against DELL. The two companies... Apple, or importing the DELL. Over at AnandTech, who really need a cleaning lady to take care
[the darkerside to rants] The power of the Apple: The combination of their hardware with their software is amazing. And there may be so many Linux zealots who say it’s not free, but you know what? I am beyond that. I do get the power of Unix and can install pretty much any Unix App I want, there is an active development community and an OS is not a religious thing for me.
[Anandtech.com] AnandTech: The 20" LCD Shootout: Dell versus Apple: In fact, the 20" M9177LL Cinema displays are so unique that Apple really only has a single Tier 1, 20" wide screen competitor - Dell's UltraSharp 2005FPW. The move to wide screen computer displays has been a slow one. Unlike digital TVs, which are mandated to be HD capable by a certain year based on their screen size, regulatory committees do not enforce similar directives on PC displays - and rightfully so.
[Displays.engadget.com] Apple cuts Cinema Display prices - Displays - displays.engadget.com.: The Dell uses the same "panel" as Apple does on the 20" widescreens but after that all the specs are different. Apple uses a better more even backlight and a far superior plastic film panel - the part you look through to see the panel (be it, the "glass") Thus the Apple screens are far smoother and dont exhibit any pixelation. I have a 20" Apple Cinema Display and a Dell 2005FPW side by side. The Apple is much more pleasant to use and far better colour accuracy.
[Dylangreene.com] Dylan Greene dot com - Apple 20-inch Cinema Display vs Dell 2005fpw: I would go with the Apple. The reason: If you read the review it says that the Dell "2005FPW had numerous discoloration problems and generally poor image quality". I assume this is how Dell got their price to be lower; they cut corners!
[Isaack.info] Isaack » Blog Archive » Apple Cinema Display 20”³: Now… guess which display I wanted immediately, hehe, yeah, the Apple. I really liked the multiple inputs of the DELL… but I have a hard time buying DELL, I hate their cheap looks and feel. I hate their policy, ever wondered why they have so many free shipping campaigns… it’s because it will cost you a freaking $130 in shipping when ordering from them… if you have to return something, you have to use their shipping which is again $130… I refuse to pay $130 when Denmark’s own postal service virtually(never happend to me!) never breaks or loses anything and only charges you $7.
[Jeffcroft.com] JeffCroft.com: Apple Cinema Display 20” vs. Dell 2005fpw: With that said, I read (and don’t know if it’s true) that LIST price is pretty similar, especially now that Apple dropped the price on the smaller displays. As with everything else, if Apple starts to notice that people aren’t buying their displays in favor of Dell Monitors, I think they’ll drop the price again. It’s another example of, why NOT, if people are willing to pay it?
